Wow, what an event! The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ have been officially announced and suffice to say, it lived up to the Dream! (Pun certainly intended!) Encase you missed it, we live-blogged the event here.
So, as the latest editions to the Samsung Galaxy S family, what does this new generation bring to table and how does it improve on its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S7?
Wow, I mean look at it! Taking influence borrowed by the ever-popular Edge variants from the last two generations, the display covers more of the phone than ever, with an 84.2% screen-to-body ratio, to be precise! The Infinity Display gives you a fully immersive experience thanks to the incredible new 18.5:9 ratio display and the ultra-thin bezel; so similar to the latest iPhones, it’s bye-bye to the physical home button.
The Samsung Galaxy S8’s dimensions are 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm with a 5.8” Display and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus’s dimensions sit at 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1mm with a 6.2” Display; with both boasting QuadHD screens!
Under the bonnet:
Now running on an Octa core, 64 bit, 10 nm processor and Snapdragon 835, the rumbustious performance of the phone is noticeably faster and sleeker. We only got a quick peek at the functionality of the device, so we can’t say for sure whether it would be so smooth with a few GBs of videos, selfies and apps; however the new Android 7.0 runs in a way that we’ve not seen in any other handset. There’s 64GB of internal data, but as usual with Samsung there’s a slot for a microSD, so you can extend your memory to over 2TB.
Something pretty neat on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ is the Iris scanner which allows you to not only lock and unlock your phone, but also use to access certain apps with sensitive and personal information.
The iPhone has Siri, but the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have their own artificial intelligence via Bixby! According to this demonstration, and keeping in line with ‘unbox your phone’ Brixby does not work with the phone but instead “understands context”. It's intuitive and learns patterns from the phone’s user! They showed a great little trick in Brixby Vision where you can point to a building or area (in this case a famous landmark in New York) and Brixby was able to tell you where’s near to go for dinner!
Samsung Pay was also mentioned; however this is unavailable in the UK. We were rather shocked to hear that there have been 240 million transactions worldwide. According to TechRadar however, Samsung Pay will be available across Europe soon...
One thing I was looking forward to was not so much using the camera, but seeing how they would look on these gorgeous 18.5:9 Quad-HD ratio display screens! Quite simply, they look incredible, but with a Dual 12MP camera, it’s no surprise! As you may have seen from the examples in the presentation, from city skylines at night to a few mates in the pub, the moments in your life can be captured to make memories even crisper!
Features include 1/2.5" sensor size, 1.4 µm pixel size, geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9MP image recording, touch focus, face/smile detection, Auto HDR and panorama.
The 4K video recording is also fab, Samsung have really nailed it with some awesome video editing features (which I could spend hours on!) and for all you vein attention seekers out there (you know who you are!) the front-facing 8MP camera is perfect for selfies, especially with the facial recognition feature for smart autofocus!
Final (but early!) thoughts:
Samsung really built up this event and we can’t blame them. Not only is the new Samsung Galaxy S8 range gorgeous and almost ahead of its time aesthetically, its features are giving Android users exactly what they want; good looks, good performance, great camera and cool techy features. Will other Android smartphones compete against the new Samsung flagship? Many tried against the Samsung Galaxy S7 range and failed. It’s safe to say Samsung have upped their game stupendously with the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ I can’t wait to get my hands on it again!
