With the release of the iPhone 15 in 2023, Apple upped its game and brought a whole host of exciting new features to the table. There’s a longer battery life to keep you tapping away all day, a huge screen with loads of lifelike colour, and a speedy processor for super-fast multitasking. It’s a pocket-sized powerhouse that’s perfect for work and play. And you can take your pick from a regular model, an iPhone 15 Plus, an iPhone 15 Pro, or an iPhone 15 Pro Max

What they all have in common though is that you can download plenty of handy apps that make your life easier. One of these little gems is call recording, which can be helpful if you want a backup of a meeting or need to remember some vital info.

Is it OK to record phone calls in the UK?

Before we get into any of the specifics, there’s one question we need to answer – is it legal to record phone calls in the UK? Most of the time, yes, and you don’t always have to tell the other person that you’re doing it. But there are different rules for businesses, as well as what you do with the recording. For example, if you share a conversation without consent, you could face civil action. And if you sell it to a third-party, that might open you up to a criminal case. Like a lot of things, it’s all about consent. You’ll also have to be careful with sensitive data like race, religion, gender identity, etc. In short, it’s best to be safe and make sure everyone’s on the same page before you hit record.

How do you record a phone call on an iPhone?

To record a call on your iPhone 15, you’ll need to use an existing app or download one. Let us introduce you to a couple of our favourites. There are lots of apps that let you do it no problem.

Voice Memos

One route you could take is using the Voice Memos app. You can find it in the Utilities folder on your iPhone 15 or pop it on your Home screen for easier access. Once you open it, you’ll be able to turn your mobile into a portable recorder for personal notes, lectures, ideas for tunes and, of course, phone calls. Here’s how to do it.

  • 1

    1. Grab a second iOS device with Voice Memos installed and set it up to start recording.

  • 2

    2. When you make a call, choose Audio and then tap Speaker.

  • 3

    3. Hold your second device close to your phone and press Record.

  • 4

    4. When you’re finished, tap Record again to save the file.

  • 5

You can then share the recording by pressing the three dots and then the Share button.

Google Voice

If you’ve got a Google account (who doesn’t?) you could also check out Google Voice. It’s free to download on the app store, even on iOS devices, and gives you loads of handy features like free voice mail, a free phone number, and a call-around service.

  • 1

    1. Once installed, activate recording in the settings under Incoming Call Options.

  • 2

    2. You can then choose whether to answer a call through the app, or have it forwarded to your usual mobile number.

  • 3

    3. If you answered through Google Voice, tap the number 4 to start a recording.

  • 4

    4. Tap 4 again when you’re finished.

It’s as easy as that, and the Google Voice app will even automatically tell the other person when you start recording, just to keep everything safe and above board.

What other options are there?

Of course, you don’t have to choose between Apple or Google – there are lots of third-party programs available on the app store ready and waiting to come and live on your mobile. Rev is a transcription service that works like a three-way conference call, with the recording acting as the third number. Recording and storage is both unlimited and free, so you only need to pay if you want to transcribe a conversation.

You can find a few paid apps as well that get the job done, including TapeACall Pro, Call Recorder Pro, and Phone Call Recorder – ACR. These range from one-time purchases to annual subscriptions, and some have trial versions you can try out for free.
