Sony 3D Creator Could Kill AR Scepticism

Sony 3D Creator App

Sony has taken the world of augmented reality and put it in the palm of your hand. Thanks to the release of the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact smartphones with Sony’s 3D Creator app, you can now take augmented reality into your own hands on a whole new level!

We’ve seen and heard much criticism around AR with people calling it a gimmick and many not taking it seriously as part of our future day to day technology, however it seems that Sony may have now muted this scepticism with the introduction of their 3D Creator App.

This app, we have to admit is pretty incredible! Their 3D scanner accurately creates an AR replication of the person or object you have scanned, with astonishingly precise and accurate detailing. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to try this out for ourselves when Sony came in last week to provide us with some training on the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact handsets.

The scanning process is aided by on screen dots of which you need to follow in order to create the avatar. As long as the subject keeps still, you keep the camera focused solely on the subject and you follow the dot-to-dot on-screen instructions, you’ll be able to create a pretty decent avatar (just make sure the lighting is good as it doesn’t deal well with light glare).

Once you’ve created your avatar, the possibilities are endless! Sony has pre-loaded apps such as their AR Camera which you can see your avatar through a normal camera in your everyday settings, or the Shadow Lol App, where you can turn you avatar into a meme, music video, or put them into well known movie scenes- very cool!

You can also use the 3D Creator to scan objects such as furniture so you can see how they would look in a room (kind of like a ‘try before you buy’), send scans to be 3D printed straight from your phone and of course, you’ll be looking at using your avatar in gaming very soon, as Sony look to introduce it to consoles such as PlayStation so you can use your avatar within your games such as Fifa (you could literally become the face on Ronaldo or Messi!).

We are very excited to see where this goes! When playing around with the 3D Creator during training, we found it to be incredibly engaging and the attention to detail on the avatar was mind-blowing! Sony has made what would usually be an extremely complex process, into one that is so simple that both you and I can do it with use of their smartphone (remember, this feature is only available on the Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact).

Sony’s tech guy Dom has made a video explaining how cool their 3D Creator App is and showing you exactly what you can do with it – check it out on our YouTube channel here.

Have you had a chance to try it yet? We’d love to know what you think of it; let us know in the comments below!
