Wow, I’m writing this just minutes after the climax of Apple Live 2014 and although we couldn’t make it to the States, you can sense the excitement following the announcement of the iPhone 6 and newly introduced iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone variant with the largest screen to date!
So let’s dive straight into the new specifications, apps and all round cool technology that Apple will be bringing to the next generation of Smartphones…
Handset Size and Display:
The new iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen and is 5.41 inches tall, 2.64 inches wide and now just 6.9mm thick, making it the lightest iPhone to date and the most sleek yet! The iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand is more on the side of the Phablet, with a 5.5-inch screen. The 6 Plus is 6.22 inches in height, 3.06 inches in width and like its little brother, also 0.28 inches in depth.
These displays have improved resolutions dubbed "retina HD", meaning that the iPhone 6 offers 326 pixels per inch and the iPhone 6 Plus an incredible 401ppi.
Now let’s treat these phones as one for a moment and see what new technology is included in both handsets and what to expect from the up and coming new OS from Apple, iOS8...
These iPhones both have the new A8 processor which has 2 billion transistors resulting in 25% faster CPU performance. Believe it or not, this makes this new generation of iPhone 50% more efficient than iPhones of the past! The A8 is able to sustain performance-intensive tasks, like playing a game at higher frame rates. No lag, no freezing, just a smooth and steady constant performance.
The new camera is an 8MP iSight camera and my word have they created something special when it comes to capture with the 1.5µ pixels and ƒ/2.2 aperture, along with it's whole new lense sensor. The new video apps also enable a steady tracking option so that every video is crisp and unshaken.
Apple look to “put an end to Wallets” with the iOS 8 ability to pay via your iPhone. This has been called Apple Pay and uses an NFC (near field communication) chip featured these new phones which enables you to simply wave your phone in front of (what must be an updated) chip and pin machine and then… you’re done! Paid! It really is as simple as that! It took all of a 1 second video for Apple to demonstrate this, humorously!
Tim Cook of Apple described the service as being "totally secure" as it worked without Apple needing to store the credit card details themselves, or the user having to share their name and card details etc with the cashier.
The M8 is a new health and fitness feature that keeps tabs on all the different apps on your iPhone that track your health and work-out routines. M8 has the ability to discern between types of activities - for example, it can tell the difference between a run and when you're out on the bicycle. It'll keep tabs on things like how far you've traveled in a day and at what elevations, so it will calculate the number of stairs you go up and down at any given time.
These are the main points that attracted us to the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. A full review will be published shortly from Mobile Phones Direct with further confirmed specs and details, so watch this space!
