Over the past few weeks, various sources across the internet (including us!) have speculated on the various rumours surrounding the up and coming flagship smartphone from Samsung, yet the South Korean giants have stayed hush-hush on what they call “Project Zero” – That is until now.
In a curious move from Samsung, you can now find on their Finnish and Swedish websites, support pages for for both the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge; or SM-G920X and SM-G925X, as they’re otherwise known respectively. The discovery has sent tech bloggers and journalists in to a spin and the ‘leak’ was originally spotted by GalaxyClub.nl.
The support pages may not have stated any images or specifications, however the new products made a pass through the AnTuTu benchmarking suite under the name “Samsung Galaxy S6 new model”. These newly released specs are listed below, however we must stress that at the moment we cannot be sure whether or not the following belong to the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
The Specifications released via AnTuTu for the “New Samsung S6 product” are as followed:
- Running on Android 5.0.2
- 5.1 Touchscreen - 1440 x 2560 pixels
- 20MP Rear Camera
- 5MP Front-facing camera
- 3GB of Ram and 32GB of internal storage
Samsung’s controversial decision to ditch Qualcomm’s Snapdragon range (at least on the majority of phones) means both devices will be powered by its own 64-bit Exynos chipset. It’s also now been revealed in the past few hours that the standard Galaxy S6 will move to an aluminium unibody chassis highly reminiscent of the iPhone 6. Meanwhile, the experimental S6 Edge will copy the side ‘edge display’ of the Note 4 – quite possibly on both sides of the phone. It also looks like the end once and for all of the dispensable battery – at last.
In my opinion, the fascinating revelation for the the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is Samsung’s new approach to the software. Its TouchWiz Android skin and third party apps have often been criticised for the amount of storage space they take up and how much they compromise the handset’s performance. From now on TouchWiz is said to be far more stripped back and modular with users able to remove elements they dislike/don’t need, thus no longer imposing so much memory space.
Again, the big question is: “When is the Samsung Galaxy S6 released, Mobile Phones Direct?!” - Right now a release date is not confirmed although we would put our bottom dollar on the launch to come at the MWC 2015 in early March.
