iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is here; and although we were not surprised by what Tim Cook and Co revealed, you still cannot help to be impressed.  Apple makes the everyday special, and then they work hard to keep it ahead of the competition.  Apple products are a joy to own.  From the moment you step into an Apple store, through unwrapping the packaging, right up to the moment you replace it with the new and shinier model.

The iPhone 5 is no exception; it comes in feature rich, perfectly gauging the requirements of the public.  No use less gadgets, no gimmicks.  Just real world improvements to what people want (like the bigger screen), and new additions that make using an iPhone easier (like Facebook integration).  Apple even future proof themselves with inclusions such as 4G.  Evolution not revolution, but what an evolutionary jump it is!

Design

Tall, dark and handsome (the black one at least), the iPhone 5 is a quality product.  The edge is beautifully detailed and gives the whole phone a wonderful feel.  The matt aluminium back feels more durable than the glass of the iPhone 4/4S.  It is an understated design, but with detailing and finishing that surpasses even Apple’s usually exceptionally high standards.

The design is beautiful, that was probably to be expected with Sir Jonathan Ive at the design helm.  The relentless quest for perfection and improvement in industrial design of the iPhone has left the surprisingly light iPhone 5 at a level of quality that transcends any other mobile phone. You hold one, it feels special and that can make you feel special too!  That is what great design can do.

Operating System

The iPhone 5 is the first handset to run the latest version of Apple’s operating system, iOS6.  Here are the big improvements.  There has been a Siri upgrade, there is Facebook integration, and there is Apple’s new passbook to hold your tickets and boarding passes all in one place.  In line with Apple’s movement away from Google, Google Maps has been replaced with Apple’s own maps application.  This features a 3D flyover feature, and voice controlled turn-by-turn navigation.  Sounds good to me.  The dedicated YouTube app has been removed.  But never fear, lovers of Sneezing Panda’s and Lady Gaga’s latest video; there is a new YouTube app available from App Store.  iOS6 is a nice evolution and is again the best mobile operating system.

Processor

The performance gauntlet has been laid down by the quad-core Android behemoths, such as the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3.  Apple’s iPhone 5 boasts the new A6 processor.  According to Apple this will run twice as fast as the A5 processor in the iPhone 4S.  It will also run alongside 4G capability to give super fast download speeds of up to 150Mbps.  Fast and responsive, the iPhone 5is what we expect . . . virtual perfection.

Screen

The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone to change the screen size.  A new 4” RETINA display screen with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio.  This allows for an extra row of apps on the home screen, but because the screen is not any wider the screen can still be easily used with one hand.  Viewing videos with no more black bars, more screen real estate to read texts and emails.  The 4” screen maybe smaller than some of the iPhone 5’s Android competitors, but it is a massive improvement.

Battery

Slightly bigger and better battery, managed better by iOS6 and the new A6 processor.  Better battery performance.

Memory

As with previous iPhone models there are 3 options, these are 16, 32 and 64GB options.  Next.

Camera/Video Recorder

The iPhone 5 has an 8MP camera with video capture at 30fps.  This is the same sensor as the previous generation iPhone, but that was top of the market.  The biggest improvement is the panoramic feature, capable of taking up to 28MP photos through 240 degrees.

Features

Passbook

Facebook and Twitter integration

Apple maps

iCloud

App Store

New Apple EarPod earphones

New Lightning connector

Conclusion

We knew what to expect, we knew what was coming, but this latest iPhone is the best iPhone ever.  For Apple fans it is not going to be a debate whether you want one, Android fans may promote the qualities of the Galaxy S3.  The iPhone 5 is the easiest and most intuitive Smartphone to use; it is feature rich and technologically the most advanced phone around.  When you combine this with sleek and stylish looks, you have an unbeatable package.  It may not be the re-invention of the wheel that some were hoping for, but it is another leap forward.  Leaving yet more ground between the iPhone 5 and the competition (except a few hanging on to their coat tails).

The iPhone 5, predictable yet exceptional.
